Earn an Extra 1K Delta Miles Through New Delta-Lyft Partnership
Delta recently announced a new partnership with Lyft, letting you earn Delta SkyMiles for every ride you take with the ride-sharing service. You can get one SkyMile for every $1 spent with Lyft, and three SkyMiles per $1 on rides to or from an airport, even if you're not flying Delta. If you use a service like Lyft or Uber anyway, that's a decent deal to passively earn some extra miles — Uber has a similar partnership with Starwood Preferred Guest, though the earning rates recently dropped, and you're required to have recently stayed in a Starwood hotel.
It gets better, though: there's a way to get 1,000 extra Delta SkyMiles through this new partnership by taking just a single ride. Delta has been running a promotion, through June 30th, which gives you 1,000 miles for each SkyMiles partner you earn points with for the first time (or technically, for the first time since March 2016). In other words, if there's a way to earn SkyMiles through a partnership — by transferring points from a hotel loyalty program like SPG or Hilton Honors, signing up for Delta's Dining Rewards and eating at a participating restaurant, buying something through the SkyMiles shopping portal, etc. — that you haven't done yet, registering for this promotion gets the bonus for each partnership you earn miles through. I think even credit card earning counts, if you've never had a Delta-Amex co-branded credit card and sign up for one, though I can't say for sure.
The easiest and quickest way to grab 1,000 bonus miles is the new Lyft partnership. Here are the steps:
- Register to earn bonus SkyMiles for partner earning at this page.
- If you don't already have an account, download and sign up for Lyft. You can also apply a $20 new user credit for rides ($2 off five rides or $5 off two rides).
- Connect your Lyft and Delta accounts here.
- Take a ride that costs at least $1 before June 30th (keep in mind the new user credit — the discounts don't count for miles 😉)
- Enjoy your bonus!
1,000 SkyMiles is a nice chunk for free. It won't take you anywhere on its own, but it can help you get towards that next flight award!
If you have the patience, definitely look into the other SkyMiles partnerships: dining (Rewards Network) and the online shopping portal are two of the easiest to use, especially since you're likely eating out or shopping online anyway. Here is a complete list of all the Delta SkyMiles partners.
Let me know in the comments if you take advantage of this or have any issues!
Update, 5/26/17: You can also trigger the bonus offer by transferring Amex MR points or signing up for an Amex-Delta credit card, if you haven't had one before. Signup bonuses are at their highest ever right now, see this post for details.
